Who is NikMartken.

“Rhythm is everywhere… It’s all around us, you can feel it, even touch it sometimes. It is inside you, your heart, breathe, the way you walk: that’s rhythm.
Rhythm is everything”.

I am NikMartken, an Italian drummer and poli-percussionist who, as you can see above, is obsessed with rhythm and all rhythmic instruments. I like defining myself as a drummer more than a percussionist because the drums were my first love: I have been playing different styles since I was 16, from rock to metal, from blues to jazz, from folk to progressive.

My crazy passion for this instrument drove me to discover its ancient origins and to get closer to various world’s percussions from Africa, Latin America, the Desert, Folk and Celtic rhythms, Eastern European and, last but not least, Asian and Oriental music. The discoveries found a place called Headtrip Acoustic Project, an acoustic trio with guitars, percussions and didgeridoos.
Here I am mixing the different styles mentioned above. These vibes are all included in the stories that I usually tell between one song and the other and, I guess, thanks to the tales of Nature, Fantasy and Magical Elements accompanied by all my little percussive toys, people started to call me The Shaman (with huge respect for the real Shamans out there).

I discovered the didgeridoo after an amazing journey around Australia and, after many years chasing it, I finally got in my hands a truly addictive dream: the Handpan.

The Handpan, for me, is in a certain way the final evolution of all percussions I have been playing, where all those techniques meet creating unique harmonies and beats beautifully fused together, hard and soft, feelings and emotions… when the words can’t explain what’s going on, I let the instrument do it.

“Rhythm is everywhere, rhythm is everything”.

Recording & Experimentations

As I said before, I am drummer and percussionist but I am also recording engineer which likes to pay attention to details in the studio when recording, both for me and other musicians.

Sky's the limit!

It’s not about having a thousand microphones, but knowing how to use them to capture the right sound and this sometimes requires to think outside the box.

This way, who knows what comes out from those takes: maybe a signature sound or a new unique harmony… It’s a discovery process.

I record my music by myself and this allows me to choose different paths to recreate the original idea I have in my head, like emphasizing sounds and harmonies that naturally come out of the instrument: imagine how many colours you could find in a Handpan, a Djembe, a Didgeridoo or a Tàr I am simply trying to capture them all.

This attention to details, the influence of the environment on the takes, discovering the sound of the instrument… all of this is not only for me but also for the people who want to start a collaboration with me where they can find fertile soil for creating new music or adding some spice to what they already have.

I am also a Graphic and Web Designer and after several years working in design agencies, I started to walk my own path where I am trying to reach my biggest dream: blending Design and Music.

By sharing my knowledge, I love helping and developing ideas not only for compositions, recordings and more but also developing visual and graphic concepts for my projects, bands, collaborations and other musicians and artists in general.

I am currently working closely with local artists for developing their visual concepts and guiding them in the right direction by sharing also some of my visionary view of Arts and Graphic Design.
